Introduction

Fitting in and finding your place within society can be a constant struggle; but what if a place for your identity does not yet exist? What if you were forced to live with continuous aggravating and humiliating scrutiny? Could you manage to ignore everyone’s relentless attempt to make you feel abnormal? Transgender individuals experience this type of reality daily, as they fail to fit into the strict gender binary society. Ranging from the ways transgender individuals communicate to the way they dress, every aspect of their identity is challenged.

Today’s society, a gender binary society, both visible and invisible gender regulations exist. These regulations are methods used by the government to control and structure the citizens of its society. While nearly every human-being has witnessed these methods of regulations, only a small portion of individuals really ever acknowledge their existence and the effect of their existence. If you have recently gone shopping, played a sport, or even used a public restroom, then you have personally witnessed these gender binary structure methods.

For instance, imagine that last time you went shoe shopping or even clothes shopping. If the mall or department store had two selections, male or female, then they’re playing an active role of supporting the gender binary society. Next imagine the last time you went out to eat and needed to use the restroom. Were there only two restroom facilities, both being male or female? This common experience is another clear example of a gender binary society.
